Brown marmorated stink bugs overwinter indoors in Central Ohio. When fall temperatures drop they move from gardens and tree lines into the warmest shelter available - your home - through gaps around windows, doors and vents. They do not bite or reproduce inside, but they cluster in wall voids, attics and behind window trim, and they release their namesake odor when disturbed.
Signs of stink bugs
- Clusters on the south and west exterior walls in September and October
- Stink bugs around window trim, door frames and light fixtures indoors
- Bugs coming from inside wall voids, attics or crawl spaces when disturbed
- A persistent odor in a sealed room, which can last for days
- Smear marks on light-colored walls, curtains or window sills
- Higher pressure on properties near fields, tree lines or wooded lots
How we treat stink bugs
Fall stink bug control is exclusion plus removal, not spraying. Indoor sprays alone do not solve it because the population is already in the wall voids - spray only reaches what you can see.
We seal the entry points they use: window and door frames, utility penetrations, soffit vents and foundation cracks. Existing clusters are removed by vacuuming rather than crushing, which is what stops the odor and the staining.
Exterior harborage is treated where they gather before they move in, so the next group does not establish in the same void.
Follow-up checks confirm the seals are holding. A fall exclusion service now is far cheaper than dealing with wall-void clusters all winter.
Prevention
Seal gaps at window frames, door sweeps and vents before the first hard frost. Vacuum clusters instead of crushing them, keep vegetation and wood piles off the roof line, and check window trim and attic entry points each fall. If you live near fields or wooded lots, plan for higher pressure every year.
Plans & pricing
Inspection is free for Central Ohio properties we service. Stink Bugs service is priced by scope - one-time as-needed treatment, or a quarterly plan under one of the three residential tiers that includes re-treatment between visits if the problem returns. FAQs about stink bugs
Do stink bugs live inside my house?
They overwinter inside wall voids, attics and behind window trim, but they do not live on or reproduce in your living spaces.
How do you get rid of stink bugs?
Exclusion - sealing the entry points they use - plus removal of existing clusters and treatment of exterior harborage.
Why does spraying inside not work?
The population is already in the wall voids. Spray only reaches the visible bugs, so the problem continues through the winter.
Are stink bugs dangerous?
No. They do not bite, damage structure or spread disease. The odor and the staining on light surfaces are the real complaints.
When should I call for stink bugs?
As soon as you see them on the exterior walls. Sealing in September or October prevents the indoor problem; sealing in January only limits it.
